January 8, 2025, press release from the Mercer County Board of Developmental Disabilities: CELINA, Ohio — The annual Showdown of the Mercer County Special Olympics vs. the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is set for Monday, January 13th at the Celina Field House (585 E Livingston St #1, Celina, OH 45822).
“We are thrilled to bring this game back to the Field House this year,” said Sam Fledderjohann, Mercer County Special Olympics Coordinator. “Last year was a huge success, and we’re excited to do it again!”
The evening will open with the Special Olympics Skills Team, The Wildcats, facing the Mercer County Sheriff Deputies at 6:00pm. An intermission will occur between games at 6:45 with the Special Olympics Cheer Team and Unified Cheer Team performing. The evening will conclude with the annual Bobcats vs. Deputies game at 7:00pm.
“While this game doesn’t count toward our official record, it's one the players look forward to the most. The comradery that has been built between the sheriff's department and our athletes because of this event is outstanding. From a spectator perspective, it’s also really fun to watch,” Fledderjohann stated.
The game admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the Mercer County Special Olympics Programming. Concessions will also be available. Radio personality Jonathan Williams from JW Sound & Production will be the official MC of the night.
