Spencerville's wetland retention project nearly complete

SPENCERVILLE, OH (WLIO) - Even though we haven't seen a drop of rain for a while, Spencerville is getting prepared if the skies open up and flood waters come.

The village got a $700,000 grant to create a wetland retention project. The six-acre catch basin built on the south side of Spencerville will collect the flood waters before they impact homes and streets in the village. The goal is that the plants that will be used in the basin will clean the water before it drains into an outlet pipe which eventually will drain the water into the Miami Erie Canal. City officials say they have been working on this since 2019 and are glad to see the project near completion.

"It was detrimental to the village of Spencerville to control the flood waters that are in the town," says Mayor Darrell Pugin. "We've been dealing with this problem on and on for years and we got with Choice 1 to design this basin to help control those waters. It's designed to handle a 100-year rain, so let's hope we don't have one of those, but if it does it will definitely control it."
