Local students looking to go into the law enforcement field spent the week learning and Friday is the ending of a week long summer police academy program.
"They break up individually and each one takes a different position that might occur at a crime scene so we have responding patrolmen to photographers to the detectives to the guys that are finger printing for prints," says Justin Wireman, Lima City Patrolman.
For some it's their first time here and it's a good way for them to see if this career is right for them.
"It's helpful just to feel it out feel what you want to do about it and if it's like if it works for you if it doesn't you know, it's a good way to test it. They cover a lot of points they hit a lot of the main things that we do, they hit from parking tickets to murder scenes it cool," says Emma Crowe, 1st year student.
But for others, like Michael Luke it's their 3rd year in the program and this is something he enjoys.
"I like the week overall I definitely liked yesterday, we did like active shooter training in the high school over at Lima Senior so they taught us how to enter a room how to search for people that could be possibly hinging in a room and to do that kind of stuff," says Luke.
The police department feels like it's a good way to show the students how exciting the job can be and show them some of the tools they use everyday.
"We try to keep the kids active we move from 9 o'clock in the morning to 2 o'clock in the afternoon and with a very small short lunch break, they are moving, it's all hands on, it's a great experience for them," says Wireman.
The summer academy is co-sponsored by the Lima City Schools but is open to all students in Allen and surrounding counties.
