Teaching STEM through the Game of "Tug-of-War" at Lima West Middle School

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Teachers at Lima West Middle School utilized a creative, fun strategy to show their students they can learn scientific principles through a popular game.

You may have played "Tug-of-War" as a child to test your team's strength, but this once-Olympic sport was the highlight of STEM education today at West! West science teachers had students use their strength to learn hands-on about balanced, unbalanced, and net forces and even use math after each game to determine the force distribution. Through the fun, teachers say out-of-the-classroom activities like Thursday further enrich student learning.

"Middle school, in general, I feel like is helpful to be hands-on. We're in the classroom a lot of the time, so in science, we're able to do more hands-on activities, so I like to take advantage of that. I think most of my students learn best hands-on, more entertainment in order to incorporate some learning into that as well," says Tia Fletcher, West Middle School 8th Grade Science Teacher, Lima City Schools.

After Thursday's game, students will take the concepts learned back into the classroom for future lessons.
