LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Halloween is an exciting time for the kids, but safety officials have some tips to keep all your little trick-or-treaters safe.

Tips to keep your little ghouls and goblins safe when trick-or-treating

Make sure to remind them to use the buddy system, stay with their group, communicate where they will be, and never dart out in between cars.

The most important piece of advice is to "see and be seen." Make sure your child can see through their costume and that they can be seen by motorists. Reflective clothing is always a plus, and you can have your little ghoul or goblin carry a flashlight with them. Make sure to remind them to use the buddy system, stay with their group, communicate where they will be, and never dart out in between cars. Don't forget that Mom or Dad needs to check out the candy haul when everyone is back home.

"Parents should check the candy first before the children start eating; that way that they make sure everything is wrapped, it's safe because sometimes you know things do happen with candy falling out wrappers; we just don't, you know, you don't want to eat that type of stuff. But you know, another main thing is don't go into houses where you don't know the people. Always stay on the porch; make sure your parents can see you; don't go away from them," stated Patrolman Eric Mericle, D.A.R.E. and Safety City officer.

Mericle says to only trick or treat in neighborhoods you're familiar with. And he reminds drivers to be on the lookout in case kids run out into the street. Lima's trick-or-treat is set for Halloween night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
