President Donald J. Trump gave his first State of the Union address Tuesday night (1/30/18).
Trump covered his bases in talking about the challenges and successes the country is seeing. He had a lot to say about tax cuts and immigration, and about working together in the coming year to get things done. There was also strong notes of patriotism in his speech.
"Preston's reverence for those who have served our nation reminds us why we salute our flag, why we put our hands on our hearts for the pledge of allegiance, and why we proudly stand for the national anthem," said Trump.
Statements like that one, Ohio Northern University Professor of Political Science Dr. Robert Alexander says, will stick out in the public's mind above all of the policy talk.
"There were a lot of really powerful folks that Trump had invited to the gallery," says Alexander. "He spent more time than normal talking about God, talking about country, talking about the flag, talking about these kinds of icons that you really can't argue with these things. Those will be the big takeaways that most people will have."
Still, Alexander says in the long run the State of the Union will be forgotten by most in just a matter of days.
