WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - Local residents are doing whatever they can to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
When she saw the destruction on the news, her first reaction was to call around the area and see if anyone was working on relief efforts.
Volunteers and donors on Thursday worked on filling up their second semi trailer of the week with toiletries, water, pet food, and anything else someone who has lost everything might need. The first semi was sent to the Tennessee/North Carolina border, and the second will head to an airport, then the supplies will be taken to be air-dropped to the areas of North Carolina where the roads have been washed away.
The drive was organized by Ginger Stinebaugh. When she saw the destruction on the news, her first reaction was to call around the area and see if anyone was working on relief efforts. She couldn't find anyone, so she rallied her daughters and started collecting donations. Several large local manufacturers have donated pallets worth of supplies, and individuals dropped by all throughout Thursday to do their part.
If you would like to give money or supplies, volunteers will be accepting donations again at the Wapakoneta VFW on Friday and Saturday from 9 am. to 4 pm.
"Some of these people that aren't corporations, that are coming in and writing these big checks. The gentleman that gave $17 that isn't working right now is just as important as the people that bring in $1,000 checks. The outpouring from the community has just been unbelievable, but we knew it would be. There's some surrounding towns and just Wapak. You know the hearts of these small little towns," Stinebaugh said.
