Wapakoneta City Council decided to focus on road work as they move forward with the possibility of an income tax increase.
At the council meeting held Wednesday, they voted to amend part of the resolution that would focus on infrastructure - such as sewer, water and electric work. Council and residents, who attended the meeting, indicated they felt the money from the half percent increase would best be used to pave damaged roads in the city. First Ward Councilman James Neumeier says streets in the city aren't up to par because they don't have the funds. In order to fix the roads, Neumeier says they need the public to get behind them.
"We decided to ask for a half a percent, but there's a trust issue and what we're trying to do is to tell the people, we're going to fix the streets, the parts you can see, curbs, gutters, asphalt substructure. Give us five years, see what we can do and if we can't do it, they'll take it away I'm sure," 1st Ward Councilman James Neumeier said.
Council will vote on the tax increase at their next meeting which is Tuesday, January 3rd at 7:30pm in the City Hall. Council members encourage Wapakoneta residents to attend.
