The human resources committee looked at a list of 11 possible criteria that can be used as proof of residency. Some of those include driver's license, tax information, military discharge papers, and mailing address. The committee discussed if there would be a set number of criteria, like four or five, out of the 11 possible that would have to be met for the Allen County Board of Election to declare a candidate a resident of Lima, if it was called into question.

The 2020 Census has been released and both the city of Lima and Allen County have seen a decrease in population. According to the census data, Lima’s population has decreased by 8% which is a loss of just over 3,000 residents. Allen County seeing a 4% drop of just over 4,000 residents which includes the city’s numbers. Lima Mayor David Berger says while the number of residents is fewer, the community is becoming more diverse. Berger and county commissioners are disappointed with the decrease but are optimistic that Lima-Allen County can bounce back in population.

Held at the Eagles Lodge in Lima, Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman shared updates on different topics that are in the works in the state of Ohio. One topic Huffman shared information about was an upcoming bill that aims to address illegal sports gambling. The bill itself would introduce a new regulatory framework in the state, where sports gambling operations will need to have licensed personnel.

As of July 1st, the self-response rate for the City of Lima is just at 57% and the total county response is 67%. That is just 3% less than the 2010 census, but way below a complete count. Local officials can’t stress enough how important it is for you to respond to assure funding for about every aspect of life in our community.

It has been several weeks since the 2020 census information has gone out and local officials are still encouraging those you haven’t completed it to do so. The process has gotten even simpler. You no longer need an ID code to file online or by phone. So, if you have misplaced or accidentally have thrown out the packet no worries.

April 1 is Census Day and by now everyone should have received info at their respective homes to fill out the form.

Census Day means people should complete the survey according to where they live today. A state official said Ohio has a response rate so far of 36 percent. While we follow the governor's stay-at-home orders for COVID-19, it's a perfect time to fill your census out by phone, mail or online. The state official said the pandemic shows us the importance of public safety and health. And relief will come based on our population count. She said the survey isn't meant to be invasive, it only collects basic info.

Lima Mayor David Berger is encouraging residents to take the time to complete the 2020 US Census. Multiple mailings have gone out to residents with instructions on how to fill it out. This is the first year you can complete it online, by phone and the traditional form and mail it in. The important thing is that you fill it out.

The City of Lima and Allen County officials are doing all they can to make sure we get a complete and accurate census count this spring. Residents will soon be getting postcards that explain how to be counted on April 1st. A “Complete Count Committee” has been formed to assist anyone with questions about the census. It is only a 9 question survey that has a significant impact on communities all across the nation. Not only does the population count determine congressional representation the demographic information is essential for federal and state funding along with economic development decisions.
