An emergency medicine physician provides some tips to keep everyone safe around fall bonfires — especially kids. Doctors stress kids should have adult supervision and stay at least three feet away from the bonfire. Kids also need to wear proper shoes and avoid flammable clothing like nylon or anything loose-fitting. As for potential injuries, children often get hurt when they throw items into the fire, like leftover fireworks.

Downtown Celina was a busy place today as the Celina Lake Festival kicked off. Large crowds of people headed to the shorelines of Grand Lake Saint Marys to enjoy the festivities of the Celina Lake Festival.

The first event starts on Saturday night at Indian Lake for the "Light Up The Lake Spectacular" happening between Russells Point and Lakeview. This is one of the largest fireworks shows in the region. Pyrotecnico was hired to put on the show as fireworks will be synchronized to the music. The fireworks will start at 10 pm, and we are told the best viewing will be along the lake's west bank and Old Field Beach.

The event will start off Monday morning with the 5-K run, then at night the Lima Area Concert Band will be playing a patriotic tribute from the Rotary Pavilion and of course, the fireworks will end the day. There will not be any food or beverage trucks in the park, so the committee says you can bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a cooler to enjoy the evening. Plus there is parking off-site and there will be rides to Faurot Park.

The message has been clear, if you plan on setting off fireworks -- it's best to get them as soon as you can versus waiting last minute. "Going through what we went through in 2020 with COVID -- and what we knew -- we didn't know what to expect then," said Greer. "Last year, we knew we were going to be short, but we were trying to get the message out, and that is a message that we have tried to get out this year. Everybody tends to wait for the 3rd or the 4th, that's typically the way it has always been."
