General Dynamics gave Rotarians an update on the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center. Representatives from the tank plant spoke to the Lima Rotary Club about what's new at the plant and what the coming years could look like. They explained how the variety of vehicles in production has increased in recent decades, including vehicles other than tanks and prototypes. The plant is also working on upgrading technology, like robotics, to improve manufacturing quality and efficiency.

Allen County commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with the manufacturer of Abrams tanks and Stryker vehicles in case certain incidents arise at the plant. Allen County Homeland Security has been running drills with the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center for years, but this is the first time the two have put some sort of agreement on paper.

China has frozen the assets of General Dynamics Land Systems. They claim the reasoning behind the sanctions is because the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima makes the Abrams tanks, some of which are being sold to Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, which they say will be taken back by force if necessary.

The Senate's FY 2022 National Defense Authorization Act will include more than one billion dollars in funding to upgrade the Abrams tank, and another one billion dollars for upgrading Stryker vehicles, both of which are manufactured at the JSMC. The bill also includes 331 million dollars for the body of the Stryker vehicles to support the Army's Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense program.

Senator Sherrod Brown and Senator Rob Portman have pushed for an additional 375-million dollars to support the Stryker A-1 vehicle manufactured here in Allen County. The conference report now has a total of 1.1-billion dollars for the Stryker and 1.4-billion dollars for upgrades and modifications to the Abrams tanks. The Senate is set to consider the conference report and vote on it in the coming days.

Apollo Career Center is celebrating by inviting General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) to speak to the students about the opportunities in manufacturing. Students from the Robotics Technology and Welding programs watched a presentation from a representative from the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center. They learned about the benefits of choosing a career in manufacturing, and what it’s like to build tanks for the Army.
