March is developmental disabilities awareness month, and the Ohio Early Intervention along with the Allen County Board of DD are taking steps to help families ensure their child is developmentally on track. On Tuesday afternoon at Marimor School, free community developmental screenings were held for children ages birth to five years. These screenings assessed various aspects of development including speech, hearing, vision, dental, autism, gross and fine motor skills. Through early intervention, the Board of DD says there are plenty of resources available for parents.
Many families with kids aged 0 to 5 attended a community developmental screening Tuesday evening. The Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosted the free and public screening at Marimor School to help provide parents an assessment on their child's gross and fine motor skills, hearing, vision, speech as well as regular growth, dental, behavioral needs, and possible autism indicators.
The Lima Senior DECA Program made a big impact in the community Tuesday Evening. Two student representatives donated a check of $500 to the Marimor Legacy Foundation Tuesday Evening at the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities regular board meeting. Back in September, the Lima Senior DECA students made and sold shirts at the Buddy Walk to help raise the funds. The donated funds will be used for the third phase of the All Ability Playground Project.
The Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Business Advisory Council hosted their inaugural Independence Fair on Tuesday. The fair was open on Tuesday from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Marimor School of Allen County with twenty-six agencies attending to showcase their services for individuals with disabilities.
The All Ability Playground project through the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities and The Arc of Allen County has been in the works for a few years now, but is nearing its completion. The first playground at Camp Robin Rogers in Spencerville has been open since last fall. Children and families from all over have been enjoying it this summer, especially at The Arc's day camp. The Arc of Allen County Executive Director, Brad Perrot, says people of all abilities and ages have been able to enjoy the project because of the new and unique equipment.
The Class of 2021 received their high school diplomas during a commencement ceremony on Thursday. Jalen Manley, Hunter Deeds, and Jackson Leppla all received their diplomas and were congratulated on their success. A slideshow was played to show each of the graduates' journey to receiving their high school diplomas.
The Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities met to accept a bid from Degen Excavating who is based in Lima, to build the park. The bid came in for over $289,000 which came in above what the board expected, causing them to seek additional fundraising of around $66,000.
Marimor School hosted a Family Fall Fest on Saturday for families looking to have fun. The Family Fall Fest was held due to a need to raise money for a key project. That project is the All Ability Playground, a playground that will allow kids of all abilities to play together.
Two years ago, the Arc of Allen County and the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities teamed up to construct two all ability playgrounds in the area. One of them is now under construction and is expected to be finished by mid-July.
Lima Central Catholic and the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities teamed up to bring LCC and Marimor students together for a fun tailgating event. Basketball athletes, cheerleaders, and band members from LCC visited classrooms at Marimor Tuesday morning to spend some time with the students. Both schools also joined together to play some bucketball. The event is an opportunity for the older students to be good role models for the kids at Marimor, and to be sure that they feel included within the Lima area.
