The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) and the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) are participating in Rail Safety Week, September 19-25. The week is dedicated as a reminder to Ohioans to practice safety around all rail crossings. Every three hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. Many crashes at railroad crossings occur because motorists fail to stop at the crossing, drive around the gates, or stop/stall on the tracks.

An open house was held at the Lincoln Park railroad exhibit and small town classic depot. It was in conjunction with a diesel-powered train excursion, from Springfield Ohio, operated by the Ohio rail experience. Around 250 visitors got to climb on and explore the last Lima locomotive works steam nickel plate road engine that retired in 1958. Plus they were shuttled to the Allen county museum to check out the exhibits there.

Lima’s amazing railroad heritage is featured at Lincoln Park by the exhibition of the very last Lima Locomotive Works steam locomotive, Nickel Plate Road “Berkshire type” No. 779, built in 1959 and retired in 1958. This locomotive is 99% original and when ready for railroad service weighed about 440 tons, carried 22,000 gallons of water and 22 tons of soft coal.

The Ohio Supreme Court issued an opinion earlier this week finding that the state law that prohibits trains from blocking intersections for more than five minutes total is now invalid. The City of Lima has notified the police department as well as other officials about the change and have stated that they have connected with railroad workers about the issue of building up traffic at intersections.

It was all abord for the only summer model railroad show in the area.   2022 Van Wert Railroad Heritage show took over four buildings at the fairgrounds over the July23rd weekend.  The show brings in people from all over Ohio and the Midwest.  Besides finding some of the right pieces to complete their railroad set from the numerous vendors on hand, there was also a dozen model railroads and displays set up for p

According to the Coldwater Fire Department, just before noon Thursday a semi traveling on Main Street in Coldwater failed to yield to a train sign, causing a train to strike the semi on its side -- and then into MR. Shoppe -- causing damage to the south side of the building.

The sheriff's office says 41-year-old Jiquon Jones of Flint was heading east on State Route 613 just before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning when he went off the road and got stuck on the tracks near County Road 257. Jones jumped out of the car as a CSX train operated by Brett Tackett of Greenwich, Ohio came barreling down, slamming into the car. Deputies say no one was hurt. The incident remains under investigation.

Lima was chosen as the first project site, to help with traffic flow and safety around the many railroad crossings throughout the city. DriveOhio and InnovateOhio are also part of this project. The city reached out to DriveOhio just over a year ago to see what could be done to help with traffic issues, and that eventually led lima to be chosen for this project.
