Many parents are getting creative to help their families stay cool during the heat wave! On Tuesday afternoon, we visited the St. Marys Splash Pad where kids were staying cool by having fun with water! As temperatures rose into the 90s for the third day in a row, the kids turned the water on, dashed and leaped through water jets, and even engaged in friendly aquatic combat. At the splash pad, we talked with one little girl about the fun she is having and other ways she is beating the early season heat.

With the unofficial start of summer just days away, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District is looking for funding to build a place where people can cool down during the hot months. The park district decided in February to permanently close the beach at Ottawa Metro Park because it had become too costly and difficult to find lifeguards. All of the water features have been removed, and a sign will be going up soon to say it is closed. However, next to it will be another sign announcing a new splash pad will be coming soon, and Johnny Appleseed is looking for help to get that built.

Monday morning was the grand opening of the new “space” themed splash pad. From alien water cannons to rockets to even astronauts, there is something for everyone. And it’s not just for the kids as you can see adults can get in on the action too. The 700-hundred-thousand-dollar project was funded through private donations and state dollars and is truly unique.

With the summer weather in full swing, the splash pads in Lima are likely to be a popular spot to cool down. The fountain outside of Stadium Park has opened for the public to use. The Faurot Park splash pad is currently being worked on and is expected to be ready by the weekend.

Here in the last few days of August, we're dealing with hot temperatures, and that means that people need to get creative to stay cool.
