Plows are getting a once over and fluids getting topped off before they start tackling the roads when the first snowflake falls early Wednesday morning. They also had tanker trucks out, putting salt brine on the primary roads to help clear them later. With heavy wet snow expected, the trucks will be moving slower, so District 1 officials ask that you give the snow plows their space.

With snow on the way, many will be busting out the sleds and snowboards. With warmer temperatures than our last winter storm, Lima Parks and Recreation is encouraging everyone to come to enjoy Sled Hill at Faurot Park. They are reminding everyone to check their sleds and make sure they aren't cracked or broken to avoid injuries. Safety precautions are in place should a sledder hit any trees or poles on their way down.

With slick travel likely this week, Allen County Emergency Management is encouraging drivers to restock that emergency kit or create one. If you must travel in winter weather, drivers should carry basic items like blankets, flashlights, and washer fluid, along with non-perishable food and bottled water. A spare phone charger is also recommended in that kit if you do have to call for help.

Just before 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, first responders were called to the intersection of Elm Street and Seriff Road. It is unknown how many people were hurt in the crash, but troopers say there were significant injuries to some of the people that were transported to the hospital. A power pole near the intersection was damaged during the incident. The cause of the crash has not been released.

Ohioans who wish to learn what it takes to ride a motorcycle safely and responsibly can sign-up for rider courses online beginning Monday, Jan. 23. Training courses through Motorcycle Ohio begin as early as March and run through early November. The state has over 600,000 endorsed riders, making Ohio one of the largest states for total ridership. Education and public awareness are keys to making our roadways safer for all motorists.

According to state troopers on scene, a silver Chevrolet was attempting to turn left onto northbound Roush Road from Reservoir Road and failed to yield for a gray Honda traveling westbound on Reservoir Road, and the vehicles crashed. Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage. Bath Township first responders transported all three individuals involved in the crash to Lima Memorial hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Lima Kiwanis Club heard about the benefits that the Allen County Regional Airport brings to not only Allen County but West Central Ohio. Hundreds of flights come in and out of the airport each month. They see anything from freight to corporate to even medical flights transporting organ donations. The airport has opened its hangers, so to speak, to bring the community out to the airport. With open houses, a Halloween event, and the Flight Before Christmas in 2022, more people are becoming aware of this great resource.

The last two days of the Lima Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign had to be canceled due to the arctic temperatures and that was a big concern about reaching their $125,000 goal. Thanks to the generosity of others, the kettle campaign collected $128,000 in donations. Salvation Army officials are thankful for all of the support for their mission.
