VAN WERT, Ohio — Rainy weather couldn’t derail a dramatic day on the junior golf circuit Tuesday as the Lima Junior Golf Association hosted the Fuerst Family Chiropractic and Northwest Ohio Welch Trophy Open at Hickory Sticks Golf Club.
In the boys’ division, Alex Bellman, a rising sophomore from Ottawa, earned his first tournament title of the season by shooting even par, highlighted by four birdies. Bellman’s steady play on the back nine gave him the outright win.
A three-way tie for second featured Evan Altenburger of Ottoville, Tyce McClain from Delphos St. John’s, and Brevin Brandt of Leipsic. Altenburger posted three birdies and an eagle to earn his playoff spot. Brandt emerged from the group to finish as the tournament runner-up and climbed to third in the season points standings.
The girls’ side ended in a playoff of its own, where Delphos-native Brylee Geary rallied from behind to win the title with a round of 88. She edged out Alex Kinney of Lewistown, who finished second and moved into a tie for the player-of-the-year lead.
Despite storms the night before, conditions held steady enough for a full day of competitive golf, as the LJGA season pushes into full swing.
