ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) — Behind a record-setting night from Caleb Schmidt, the Roughriders held off Van Wert 42–35 in a Western Buckeye League shootout Friday.
Leading 20–14 at halftime, St. Marys extended its advantage in the third quarter after a Cougar turnover. Schmidt punched in his second touchdown of the night, followed by a two-point conversion to make it 28–14.
Van Wert battled back, as quarterback Zac Crummey connected with Micah Cowan for a highlight-reel catch — slowing down and leaping over a defender for a spectacular grab. Cowan finished with 18 receptions for 330 yards. Two plays later, Crummey hit Caden Collins for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28–21.
But Schmidt simply couldn’t be stopped. On the next possession, he broke free for another score and never let the Roughriders’ lead slip away. The senior running back finished with 315 rushing yards on 36 carries and six touchdowns, carrying St. Marys to a 42–35 victory.
