COLUMBUS GROVE, Ohio (WLIO) — A Putnam County League championship was on the line Saturday night as Columbus Grove entered at 6-0 in league play, while Miller City sat just one game back at 5-1.

The Wildcats had won three of the last four meetings in the series, but this time it was the Bulldogs who seized control with a title at stake.

Columbus Grove set the tone early behind Trevon Baxter, who knocked down a three-pointer on his way to a team-high 15 points.

Miller City answered with a triple of its own as senior Henry Rump connected from downtown. He finished the night with 12 points to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs began to create separation. Holding an 11-point lead, Brady Basinger drilled a straightaway three. The junior forward tallied 14 points in the contest.

Miller City refused to back down. Jonny Pester knocked down a three-pointer of his own and led the Wildcats with 15 points, trying to spark a comeback effort.

But Columbus Grove had the final say. Landon Best buried a shot from beyond the arc to help seal the deal as the Bulldogs pulled away late.

With the 64-52 victory, Columbus Grove clinched the Putnam County League title outright.
