LIMA, Ohio — (WLIO) The defending Division VI state champion Columbus Grove girls basketball team opened its season in dominant fashion, rolling to a 66–35 road win over Shawnee on Saturday.
The Lady Indians tried to keep pace early. Down 11 in the first quarter, Anna Menke cut into the deficit by knocking down a three, making it 16–8. But the Bulldogs wasted little time responding. On the next possession, senior Nicole Nesby grabbed an offensive rebound and powered in the putback on her way to a game-high 19 points.
In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Shawnee’s Morgan Betts hit a pull-up jumper, but the Indians still trailed 20–10 after one. From there, Columbus Grove took full control.
Brynn Calvelage attacked the lane for two of her 13 points, helping the Bulldogs build a lead Shawnee could never threaten.
Columbus Grove starts its season 1–0 with a convincing victory, while Shawnee drops to 0–1.
Final score: Columbus Grove 66, Shawnee 35.
