Locos walk off Monarchs to force Game 3 in playoff semis

LIMA, Ohio — The Lima Locos are still alive in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League playoffs thanks to a walk-off win at Simmons Field on Wednesday night.
Locked in a 1-1 tie entering the bottom of the ninth, Marwynn Matthews Jr. hit a sharp grounder to second base with two outs and two on — and when the throw sailed wide, Grant McGuire came home to score the winning run. The Locos walked it off, 2-1, and evened their best-of-three semifinal series with the Michigan Monarchs.
McGuire also delivered defensively earlier in the game, chasing down a deep foul ball and making a tough backhanded catch to preserve the tie.
Lima pitcher Andy Hayes turned in a historic performance on the mound, going the distance with a complete game — the first nine-inning complete outing by a Locos hurler in a playoff game since 2018.
