DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) — For the past four years, Tyce McClain has been a standout in St. John's athletics. The senior Blue Jay leads the way in three different sports, and academically, he is among the school's top scholars with a 4.0 GPA.
That combination of athletic and academic excellence has earned him recognition as our first McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the 2025–26 school year.
From the links to the court and even the baseball diamond, St. John's senior Tyce McClain doesn't miss a beat. The three-sport star continues to grow and thrive for the Blue Jays.
"Those type of athletes are few and far between these days, as some student-athletes decide to specialize, you know, sometimes in one sport or two sports. And so being a three-sport athlete and then having the amount of success that he's had in all three, you know, from individual success in golf to team success in baseball and basketball, that is unique and to have really 3 1/2 straight years of that for him is very unique," said Aaron Elwer.
"First of all, with the faith base and the tradition we have here at St. John's has helped me develop as a person and also as an athlete when I compete in sportsmanship and stuff like that, I think that's crucial. I have great mentors and people I can lean on and trust in game time situations," said Tyce McClain.
Tyce understands the importance of academics before athletics. The senior maintains a 4.0 GPA.
"People gravitate towards his energy in the classroom, and as a teacher, you always look forward to having him come in your doorway every morning. You love to see that growth and love to have students walking our halls that our younger kids can look up to," said Mike Knott.
After high school, Tyce plans to continue his golf career at the next level while pursuing a degree in business with a minor in finance, a decision influenced by his father.
"I would say, most importantly, because of my dad, he is a financial wholesaler for Corebridge Financial, which is a nationwide company, and I've always grown up learning things from him within the business and financial world, so I would love to do something like that, and I've always loved to sell and persuade people in buying things, and I think I'd be a great fit for that," said Tyce McClain.
Success for Tyce McClain isn't just measured in wins or grades—it's measured in character. And when it comes to his legacy, he has a clear vision.
"I want to be remembered for as a leader, a great person, someone who's kind to everyone, and just someone that someone can look up to and want to base themselves off of and have someone that they want to be like," said Tyce McClain.
Congratulations to Tyce McClain — our newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
