The election of President Trump means Ohio again makes history. Ohio U.S. Senator J.D. Vance will take the oath of office as vice president on January 20, 2025. Depending on which historian you want to believe, some say Vance will be Ohio's first-ever vice president. Others say there have been three. Charles Dawe was vice president under Calvin Coolidge, Charles Fairbanks under Theodore Roosevelt, and Thomas Hendricks under Grover Cleveland. All were born in Ohio but were politically successful and elected vice president while in Indiana and Illinois.

A longtime elected official and political party leader in Allen County has died. Bob Holmes died on Saturday after a battle with cancer. Holmes was Allen County Republican Party chairman from 1974 to 1994. He organized five presidential and vice presidential campaign visits to Allen County, including the 1980 Ronald Reagan whistle-stop rally in Lima, rated by the Reagan staff as one of the best in the nation. He also served the GOP at the state level. Holmes served as clerk of the Lima Municipal Court from 1990 until his retirement in 2008. He spent 35 years at Holmes Realty.

Time is running short to donate school supplies as part of McDonald's of Ohio's second annual school supply drive. McDonald's locations, including 12 in the Lima area, along with partners Tom Ahl Family of Dealerships and Your Hometown Stations, have boxes ready to be filled with school supplies. You can drop off your donation until August 5, 2024.

He was one of the biggest and often behind-the-scenes supporters of Lima-Allen County and the region. Kewpee Hamburgers owner and president, Harry Shutt, has died. Shutt began working at Kewpee in 1957 and purchased it from the 'Stub' Wilson estate in 1980, which included the downtown Lima location and Allentown Road, with the eastside location opening in 1981.

It was a big day for one local judge as he took the mound at Cleveland's Progressive Field to throw out the first pitch before Thursday's game. Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Reed had a perfect day to toe the rubber before the first-place American League Central Guardians took on the Kansas City Royals. Judge Reed was chosen by the Ohio Common Pleas Court Judge's Association to throw out the first pitch.
