A Look into the Past: the Orchard Island Post Office

Members of the public had the chance to take a trip through time on Sunday  (July 10, 2016) at the open house of the newly restored Orchard Island Post Office in Lakeview.  The building served as the post office for Orchard Island on Indian Lake from 1912 to 1926.  It was moved and rebuilt in its current location in 2003.  It wasn't until 2015 when the Indian Lake Historical Society decided to restore the old post office to its former glory.  Charlie Strete, a member and trustee of the Historical Society, believes that it's important to not only teach about the past, but to bring it to life for people to experience.

"I like the hands-on thought process that people can come, and they can walk inside or pick something up and feel it; it's so much more interactive with them than just reading a book or something.  I think restoring this building does exactly that," Strete said.  The island that the post office sits on is now a state park and has been renamed Post Office Island.
