The Allen Count Commissioners met with representatives from the Miami County Building Department to further discuss the prospect of using their services over that of Lima/Allen County.
The Miami County reps went over what an Allen County Regional Department would look like and how it would interact with the base offices in Troy. Miami County has similar set ups with Darke, Mercer, and Auglaize Counties and believes the system works well. They say it also gives the county commissioners more control over the work than they currently have.
"This gives Allen County ownership and some control over the construction activity that's occurring in the unincorporated territories," said Richard Osgood, Director of Development for Miami County. "It gives them their own certified building department. It gives them control over the staffing to serve the commissioners, to serve the community without having to have the overhead costs and all those things that go along with having self-staffing."
While that is something that appeals to the commissioners, they want to take their time and evaluate all options before making any decisions.
"You don't want to automatically make a decision the first time you hear something," said Commissioner Gary Sneary. "I've heard this several times so far and every time I hear it, I hear something new that I like so things are going along well. We'll see where it all ends up at the end of the day."
They also want to get input from the villages as well as the townships, who will hear details tonight at their Township Association Meeting.
