LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Volunteers were on a mission to pick up trash to help keep the Ottawa River clean.

Around 180 help out during the Annual Ottawa River Cleanup

The cleanup of one of the main waterways in the area has been going on for 32 years and receives annual support.

There was a record number of people who preregistered to take part in the annual Ottawa River Cleanup this year. Around 180 people were given gloves, grabbing sticks and trash bags to tackle an assigned part of the river, starting in Shawnee Township, going through Lima, and continuing all the way to Bath Township.

The cleanup of one of the main waterways in the area has been going on for 32 years and receives annual support from organizations, individuals and companies like INEOS.

“So overall values for INEOS is obviously the overall safety of our employees, but also the environment. So, this is an opportunity for our employees to come out participate in the Ottawa River Cleanup, just to help beautify the Lima area,” said Craig Hohenbrink, Security & Emergency Response Coordinator at INEOS.

“The fact that so many people are committed to come out every single year is phenomenal. We love to see the same faces so many people have come by and I said, I recognize you from last year. Thanks for coming out again. It's awesome to see all the same people coming out, but then also some new faces coming out to support our rivers,” said Lydia Archambo, executive director of the Ottawa River Coalition.

The Ottawa River Cleanup always coincides with Earth Day.
