COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — An incident audit into the fatal attack of a Ross Correctional Officer says Rashawn Cannon of Lima was solely responsible for the officer’s death.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections released its findings on the 2024 Christmas Day attack of Officer Andrew Lansing. The report states that staffing levels at Ross Correctional Institute, Cannon’s inmate classification, and equipment were all in compliance when Cannon veered off from a group going to eat and physically beat Lansing to death in a guard shack in the courtyard.

Cannon was serving time in prison after being found guilty of felonious assault in Allen County in 2023.

Since the attack, Ross Correctional Institute has added more officers and made equipment upgrades to the facility. Cannon was moved to a higher-security prison and is facing three charges of aggravated murder. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
