LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Local organizations teamed up Saturday to help teach children how to stay safe while riding their bicycles.
A Bike Rodeo was held at the Lima Noon Optimist Safety City, where kids visited several stations focused on bicycle safety. Activities included helmet checks, bike inspections and an obstacle course race with Safety City officer Eric Miricle. Organizers said the event was designed to teach children the importance of following traffic laws and practicing safe riding habits on and around roadways.
“I think we can all agree that we drive around and see adults who aren't following laws, adults who ride bikes on the road are supposed to follow the same rules that motorized cars do. So, when you see older people not doing that, that's got to start young. So, we want to do things like this, so that from a young age, children know the rules and the basics on how to be safe on a bike,” says Megan Kinnear, Allen Co. Bike and Pedestrian Task Force.
Children who completed all of the stations and had their cards checked were entered for a chance to win a new bicycle. The event was organized by the Bike and Pedestrian Task Force, Activate Allen County, the Lima Police Department and Safety City.
