LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – The Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol recognized two Putnam County residents for wearing their seat belts, a decision that ultimately saved their lives.

Brynne and Kristen Stechschulte received the "Saved by the Belt" award, which honors individuals whose choice to buckle up protected them during a crash. In January, Kristen was driving Brynne and her friend home from volleyball practice in Defiance when their SUV was T-boned on State Route 15. Although Kristen and Brynne were seriously injured and hospitalized, they say they are thankful to be alive and credit their seat belts for their survival.

“I was glad I wore my seatbelt. I was lucky to be alive. I was pretty scared at that point. Seatbelts protect your whole life,” says Brynne Stechschulte, a "Saved by the Belt" Award Recipient.

“Buckle up- it does save lives. Make sure that every kid, every person in your car does have their seatbelt on because you just never know,” says Kristen Stechschulte, a "Saved by the Belt" Award Recipient.

Both Kristen and Brynne received a "Saved by the Belt" certificate and a license plate bracket.
