SHAWNEE TWP., Allen County, Ohio (WLIO) — Wreaths Across America continues to grow in Shawnee Township during its second year, as community members gathered to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans.
Ceremonies were held in cemeteries across the United States as part of the national effort. In Shawnee Cemetery, more than 620 wreaths were placed on graves, along with ceremonial wreaths recognizing each branch of the military, first responders, prisoners of war and those missing in action, and Gold Star Mothers.
Ohio National Guard Brig. Gen. Matthew Woodruff served as this year’s keynote speaker, encouraging attendees — especially students — to reflect on the meaning of sacrifice while laying wreaths on the graves of those who served.
“Too many times, we don't suffer through sacrifice. We don't gain resiliency, because we don't go through those trials and tribulations. That's where we learn the greatest lessons, when we go through hard times, and it's important for them to understand all the sacrifice that took place in those before them to make their way of life possible,” says Brigadier General Matthew Woodruff, Ohio National Guard.
Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who served and teach the next generation the value of freedom. Organizers say visitors walking through Shawnee Cemetery can see and feel the impact each wreath represents.
“If you come out after, after the day, especially after the snow, is going to be gorgeous. And it is very touching. It's just a great organization. And then we brought it here to Allen County, and the first one in Allen County, which that was pretty exciting. This is just the community coming together for such a great cause. And I'm so, so proud of everybody that comes out and weathers the storm," says Lesa Wende, Shawnee Cemetery Wreaths Across America coordinator.
