LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — For the past 17 years, a Lima city councilman has helped keep the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive through an annual community march.

Sixth Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is inviting the public to take part in the I Have a Dream Peace March on Monday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m. Glenn started the local march to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, similar to marches held across the country. Each year, participants walk through Lima’s south side regardless of weather conditions. Glenn says the march is a way to spread King’s message of peace and love while educating others about the civil rights leader.

“We know what Dr Martin Luther King mean and so we asked everyone research it, let your kids know. My parents let us out of school them days when it wasn’t a national holiday, my parents allowed us to march on them days. That's a very educating day. I don't call it a work day. I want you to sit down and talk with your kids, educate them, 20 minutes or 30 minutes and tell what Martin Luther King is about,” says Derry Glenn, Lima’s 6th Ward Councilman.

The I Have a Dream Peace March begins at the corner of Holmes and Reese streets and will proceed to Martin Luther King Park on Eighth Street. Participants may walk or follow the march in their vehicles. The event will take place rain or shine. For more information, contact Glenn at (419) 905-9572.
