LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With students out of school for the summer, Lima City Schools has launched its annual free summer lunch program to help ensure children continue to have access to nutritious meals while classes are not in session.

The 10-week program began Monday and offers a free hot meal to any child between the ages of 1 and 18. On the first day of the program, children could choose between a cheeseburger or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, along with fresh strawberries, green beans, Doritos, an apple and milk.

Meals are available Monday through Thursday, with Thursdays featuring Domino's pizza as the main menu item.

For many families facing rising costs for groceries, gasoline and utilities, the program provides welcome financial relief during the summer months.

"I think that they should be able to come out and not be afraid to bring their kids to come get a free meal every Monday through Thursday. It benefits everybody. So, while you're trying to juggle rent, groceries, insulin, any medication, keep your lights on for that matter.  This is one less meal you have to worry about," said Jacqueline Hardy, a participant in the free summer food program.

Children can receive meals at Heritage, Independence and Unity elementary schools, as well as Liberty Arts Magnet School, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The district's Spartan Lunch Express van is also serving meals at Lincoln Park from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and at Faurot Park from noon to 12:30 p.m., offering the same menu available at the school locations.

While meals are only available to children, several adults attended Monday's kickoff and brought their own lunches to eat alongside their children.

Families are not required to visit the same location each day and may choose any participating site throughout the summer.

The free summer lunch program will continue through Aug. 6.
