LIMA, OH (WLIO) - With the weather warming up, it was a nice day for a hike.

JAMPD invites hikers to search for early signs of spring

Hikers looked to shake off some cabin fever while searching for animal tracks, birds, and early-blooming plants.

The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District invited everyone to join them in searching for signs of spring at Kendrick Woods. Hikers looked to shake off some cabin fever while searching for animal tracks, birds, and early-blooming plants. One plant they were particularly searching for was the skunk cabbage. The warm-blooded plant may not smell great, but it is a good sign that winter could be loosening its grip.

"So we're looking for animals. We want to see signs of animals in their activity, groundhogs and skunks, and those types of things. We might not see the animal, but we're looking for signs of those. We're looking for birds, if we can some of the first birds that come back in the spring, one of my favorites, the red-winged blackbird, killdeer, and others. So we'll be listening and looking for those but, but for this one, you know, the the buds on the trees starting to swell is a good sign of spring, but really we want to find that skunk cabbage, the first blooming spring wildflower," said Dan Hodges, a naturalist with JAMPD.

The park district’s next event, “Jogging with Johnny,” will take place on Monday, Feb. 24 at Ottawa Metro Park from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
