LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - With clocks falling back this weekend, now's a good time to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
The general recommendation is to replace smoke and carbon monoxide batteries every six months and the end of daylight saving is a good time to take care of it. Lima fire officials say by having these alarms ready to go, lives can be saved when emergencies strike.
"We've had quite a few scenarios where someone did not have a smoke alarm, or they took the battery out of the smoke alarm for some reason, or they took the smoke alarm down and put it in a drawer where smoke couldn't really get to it, and one of those situations this year was fatal," said fire inspector Warren Pughsley. "We want to make sure that people understand we know you don't like the sound of the smoke alarm, but if it's going off, it's going off for a reason."
The recommendation is to have a smoke detector on each level in your home, including basement, garage and attic, and in every bedroom.
If you need help installing your detectors, contact the Lima Fire Department at (419) 221-5160.
