As part of their career Exploring program, over 100 area students visited with Lima Memorial health professionals to learn a variety opportunities in health care. From intubation and cardiographs to learning the effects of drinking and driving, the students experienced the full spectrum of medical careers. Lima Memorial health officials say this opportunity is something they wish they had when they were in high school.

"When I was in high school, this was not something that would have been offered to me at my school - so for them to be able to come and just kind of see the lay of the land, meet the different department managers, the different leaderships, different departments, just exposes them to a wide range of different opportunities, especially if they're unsure of where they want to go," said Katie Richard, trauma program manager for Lima Memorial. "They can get hands-on opportunities within the different departments. We have cadavers here today for intubation, we are teaching them about drunk driving and how that impacts different things. We see a lot of that in our trauma realm. They get to go to cardiology today and see what the cath lab is all about, and they get to go to rehab and see how they can help people after their acute events and how they can recover from those."

For the students, the career explore day is something that quite literally brings the learning to life.

"You get to meet all the staff here and network with different people that could help in the future," said Kara Burgei, a senior at Ottoville High School. "I've met a lot of providers and people that I can look up to and network with, which I think is a really good experience."

The career Exploring program is a yearly tradition at Lima Memorial.
