LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — More than a dozen young athletes from around the Lima area are preparing to compete on the national stage next week.

The Lima C2K Striders are once again heading to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics to take part in a variety of track and field events. This year’s competition will be held in Houston, Texas, and the athletes are eager to represent their hometown.

Local track athletes qualify for nationals, seek community support

“I feel good about going to the nationals. I'm really proud that this is my first year, and I made it,” said Rylen Holmen, who will compete in hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and the 800-meter run.

“It’s been really good, but kind of nervous,” added Daryan Downton, who is set to run the 400-meter dash. “But I’ve been feeling really good, pretty brave, and it’s kind of nice.”

Coach Rod Simpson, who leads the C2K Striders, says the athletes are ready for the challenge.

“The kids are going to have an opportunity to compete against the best of the best around the country,” Simpson said. “So, you know, I'm just looking for them to have an opportunity to be exposed to greatness.”

To help offset the cost of the trip, the team is seeking donations. Travel and competition expenses total around $500 per athlete. Supporters can contribute through the Lima Community Foundation or by mailing a check with “National Championship 2025” in the memo line to C2K STRIDERS TRACK CLUB, P.O. BOX 5201, LIMA, 45802. The C2K Striders are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
