LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With Flag Day just around the corner, members of the Marine Corps League are helping community members better understand the history and proper handling of the American flag.

The Marine Corps League hosted a demonstration teaching people how to properly fold, handle and display the American flag.

Organizers said they hope to educate the community about the symbolism behind the stars and stripes and the meaning of each fold in a traditional flag ceremony.

The group also reviewed guidelines for proper flag etiquette, including never allowing a flag to touch the ground and using proper lighting if it is displayed overnight.

League members said many people may not realize there are also specific guidelines for when a flag should be lowered to half-staff.

"One thing a lot of people have forgotten is there are only three times that the flag gets lowered to half-staff: through the direction of the president, the governor or, like this past Memorial Day, from sunrise until noon," said Eugene Border, commandant of Marine Corps League 1063.

The local Marine Corps League will also hold a flag collection event June 12 at the Elida administration building.

Community members can purchase new flags there or drop off worn or damaged flags to be properly retired and disposed of.
