SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WLIO) - Cookout season is upon us and there's some safety tips to keep in mind while your cooking your brats and burgers.
As the warm weather has arrived, along with it comes the time of year when grill masters get out their grills for cookouts and barbeques. But safe grilling comes with guidelines to help avoid fire hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average over 10 thousand home fires are caused by grills annually.

We caught up with the Shawnee Township Fire Department to give you the safety tips for a safe season of grilling out.
"A few things you want to keep in mind is, number one, don't use a grill indoors unless it's electric - propane, charcoal, you want to use those outside," said Matt Reaman, fire prevention officer for the Shawnee Township Fire Department. "Make sure you're at least three feet from a structure, deck railing, shed, wherever you have it, just make sure you're at least three feet away. Three feet is kind of your safe space, so make sure you keep children, pets away from the grill at least three feet as well."
According to National Fire Protection Association, over 9,000 people are burned from grill fires each year.
