COLUMBUS, OHIO (WLIO) - A state committee says there are no signs of abuse or concerns about the wellbeing of a Lima man accused of killing a correction officer on Christmas.

Rashawn Cannon is accused of attacking and killing Officer Andrew Lansing at Ross Correctional in December. Cannon was moved to the Ohio State Penitentiary after the incident. According to a memo from the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee, they conducted an unannounced inspection of the Ohio State Penitentiary on February 13 and checked on Cannon, as an advocacy group had raised concerns about his wellbeing.

Executive Director of the CIIC, Christopher Albanese, asked to see Cannon’s arms, hands, and face up close. He also requested to examine Cannon’s exposed legs, chest, and back, and saw no signs of abuse. When asked about his wellbeing, Cannon said his cell was too cold and the recreation space was too warm.

The director of the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Lansing wrote a conduct report on Cannon in April 2024, accusing him of disrespect, threats, and disobedience of a direct order.

Cannon has been in prison since 2023, after he was found guilty of felonious assault and a weapons charge in Allen County. The director of the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Lansing wrote a conduct report on Cannon in April 2024, accusing him of disrespect, threats, and disobedience of a direct order. Cannon was found guilty of two of the three charges.

On the day of the incident, Lansing was in a small structure in the middle of the yard at Ross Correctional that correctional officers use when Cannon allegedly veered away from his unit, heading toward the dining hall, and attacked Lansing.

As of now, no charges have been filed in Ross County against Cannon for the incident.
