LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – Lima and Allen County residents took time to pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes during a Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at American Legion Post 96.

More than a dozen organizations and families placed wreaths beside a flag-draped casket as a reminder that freedom isn’t free. Since World War I, more than 600,000 U.S. men and women have been killed during military conflicts. Organizers say they hope the ceremony helps people reflect on the sacrifices made by those who died or were injured while serving their country.

“A lot of people lost their lives during the wars, and then some of them carried it over when they came home, and because of their injuries, they lost their lives while they were here in the United States. So we try to remember them every year. We think about them all the time, but this is one way we can remember them,” said Bill King, adjutant of Allen County Disabled Veterans, Chapter 19.

The Allen County Commissioners and the mayor of Lima each issued proclamations in honor of the Memorial Day holiday.
