ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - In honor of Hire a Veteran Month, observed in November in Ohio, our OhioMeansJobs Allen County student employee of the month is Amarion Jackson, a Perry High School senior who has committed to serve in the military after he graduates.

Around this time of the year, many students are still trying to decide what to pursue after high school, but for Perry's Amarion Jackson, family tradition makes that decision easier. He will be following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by enlisting in the United States Army. Having veterans in the family, Jackson already knows the upsides of serving the country.

"It provides many benefits that could benefit me personally, such as the VA; I can get like 0 down on a house; more leadership goals; skills; and just overall seeing things that you really wouldn't see on the outside world," said Amarion Jackson, a senior at Perry High School.

Local recruiters see a lot of potential in Jackson, partly thanks to his experience as a three-sport athlete. Recruits like him often begin their basic training with a head start on the skills and traits necessary to be successful in the military.

"First off, he's athletic. He has track and field, which is huge for the army. We run a lot, and we do a lot of workouts. So, I think that in general, he needs a little bit of the guidance from us, but he kind of got a little bit from his father and his other family members because they had served before as well," said Thomas P. Bruce Jr., station commander for Lima Army recruiting.

When Jackson returns from his service and is ready to transition to civilian life, OhioMeansJobs has several resources tailored specifically for veterans. Their website has a list and map of veteran-friendly employers across the state, and their staff can help job seekers who served get noticed.

"Our veterans in our county are our top priority, so we're getting them set up with a resume, helping them find those employment opportunities. Veterans actually show up as the top applicants immediately for employers on our website," said Cat Neal, job coach for OhioMeansJobs Allen County.
