SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, OH (WLIO) - When you're in the military, you aren't expecting a 5-star meal, but some Apollo students prove that one could be possible.

Thanks to the U.S. Army, Apollo Career Center's culinary students were given two meals ready to eat, or MREs, and were told to re-use the ingredients and create appetizers, a main course, and a dessert for two people. They had six different MREs to choose from, like Italian sausage with peppers and onions and southwest-style beef, and then they put their skills to the test.

"Being creative, thinking outside of the box, not just using staples they are used to—potatoes, rice—they had to really to be creative," says Shawn Orphal, Apollo Culinary Instructor. "I am extremely impressed with the students; they thought of things that I couldn't come up with."

It was a complicated challenge; cause you know, me and my partner, we have never done anything like that, never experienced anything like that," says Donaven Yager, culinary student. "It definitely taught me to have more creativity with minimal ingredients."

"Well, it was actually kind of fun. I mean, it was a little stressful planning everything in like 10 minutes. But once you got used to it, teamwork helped a lot. It was nice to actually to kind of impress new people that you have never met before," says Eliana Hall, culinary student.

Apollo would like to continue the MRE challenge in the future and invite other schools to compete against one another.
