Fresh market fruits and vegetables Generic
July 29, 2024, Press Release from the Area Agency on Aging 3: In recognition and celebration of National Farmers Market week (August 4th-10th), Area Agency on Aging 3 will be distributing produce boxes on Monday, August 5th from 1-4pm at their location, 2423 Allentown Road, Lima.  Produce boxes will contain a variety of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables and be available on a first come, first served basis. Those eligible for the produce boxes are low-moderate income older adults and Allen County residents over the age of 60.

This event will be offered in addition to the traditional Senior Farmers Market Program administered by the Area Agency on Aging 3.  Current enrollment/application status for the traditional Senior Farmers Market Program does not impact eligibility to receive produce boxes offered at this event. This event is targeted toward low-moderate income older adults and Allen County residents over the age of 60 are eligible.  A valid ID will be required at the event and only one box will be distributed per identification.

“We are thankful for the Allen County Healthy Aging funding and excited for this event as it is an opportunity for older adults to access healthy foods which directly reduces the effects of chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, and others.  The Area Agency on Aging 3 recognizes the increased cost of living along with the challenges that prohibit access to healthy foods which can lead to food insecurity commonly found among older adults.  The agency is also pleased to support our local farmers to bring business to their markets and stands as they work to make a vital difference in the lives of the aging population in our communities,” Area Agency on Aging 3’s Population Health Director Dre White commented.

Produce boxes will be valued from $25-$30 and contain corn, tomatoes, zucchini, onion, peaches, apples. Distribution will be done by drive-through so no one will have to get out of their cars. Upon arrival ID checks will be done, and then boxes will be delivered to their cars.

This event is funded thanks in part to Allen County Healthy Aging funding and in partnership with county commissioners and the Allen County Council on Aging.
