Thanksgiving is a day that many people look forward to because of the delicious food and time they get to spend with family. But it is also a day that many people put their life in danger because of bad cooking practices.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are more than three times as many home cooking fires on Thanksgiving than any other day. And that is why local firefighters want to remind people that these simple steps can ensure your holiday stays fun and not turn into a catastrophe. One of the first major tips is to not leave the food while it's cooking unattended.
“When you cook a turkey make sure you allot enough time for yourself or another adult to be home while the turkey is in the oven cooking,” said Jeff Jones, Shawnee Township Fire Department Captain. “We have had calls where a turkey would over boil over inside the oven and can cause an oven fire.”
Another major tip is to properly use power sources.
“Extension cords are used pretty readily during the holidays for crock pots and electric skillets going and make sure those aren’t trip hazards because that will also be a hazard or also overloading the circuit can be a fire hazard as well,” said Jones.
In the past 11 years the Shawnee Township Fire Department captain can only remember being called out one time on thanksgiving because of a major cooking fire. But the risk is still out there especially if you deep fry your turkey.
“Definitely a good idea to do it outside,” said Josh Hodges, Shawnee Township Fire Department Fireman. “It’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher when you do it in a well- ventilated area. Definitely know how much oil should be in the fryer as well so that you’re not overflowing onto the heating element because that can cause a fire.”
Fire officials also want to remind you to use timers to keep track of how long your food is cooking and to not wear long sleeves that could come in contact with a heat source.
“We want to try to keep everyone safe during the holidays,” said Jones. “This is supposed to be a joyful time for them all.”
