WAPAKONETA, OH (WLIO) - The Auglaize County Sheriff addressed the public on Sunday about some of the biggest issues law enforcement agencies are focusing on.
Sheriff Michael Vorhees was invited by a group of citizens to speak on various crime and safety concerns. Vorhees explained how his department regularly meets with state and federal legislators to discuss bills aimed at combating problems like drug trafficking and foreign nations purchasing land in the United States.
He also discussed upcoming improvements to the county jail, the state's 911 system, and how sheriff's offices across the state work together to train for possible domestic or foreign terrorist attacks. Of all the threats facing citizens, Vorhees said that cybercrime and scammers are some of the most common problems locally.
"First of all, don't give any personal information out. Don't talk to them; don't be afraid to hang up on them, don't fall into it. What I tell people is call your local law enforcement, ask them, 'Hey, this is what I had. Is this real? Is this not real?' They will be more than happy to take your questions," Sheriff Vorhees explained.
He adds that many of these scammers target the elderly and often pose as representatives from your bank or law enforcement, claiming you must pay a fine or be arrested. The department has even received reports that scammers have used the names of real local officers.
