ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) - Grand Lake Health System celebrated the completion of its new sensory garden with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday.

The Pediatric Sensory Garden was built to help young patients engage with their senses as a part of their rehabilitation services.

Leaders from around the state, including U.S Representative Jim Jordan, attended the garden's opening, which was moved inside due to weather.

Officials with the health system said the new garden will incorporate play into patients' therapy, which will make their rehabilitation more impactful and enjoyable.

"A lot of times with our younger rehab patients, whenever a therapist can utilize and incorporate play into their therapy, it helps with their motor skills and just mimics some of the play that helps with their rehab," said Cynthia Berning, Grand Lake Health System president.

The health system was awarded the Special Achievement Award from the Southwest Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce in May.

Officials said the garden helps with its mission of cutting travel times for families seeking medical care.Â
