Birds are back at the Putnam County Fair

As many fair goers probably know there was no poultry at the fair last year because of a bird flu scare but this year the birds are back.

People at the poultry tent said the sights and sounds of the fair last year just weren't the same without all the chickens, ducks and geese.

"Not to have the birds here or hear the birds crowing in the morning, you don't hear that or you don't see the eggs in there," said Bobby Johns, a judge at the junior fair.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture canceled all poultry shows in 2015 to protect the state from the avian flu, after it showed up in surrounding states.

"It was terrible. It wasn't the same walking through the barns without hearing quacks and chirps and everything through birds," Renee Kraner, a poultry exhibitor in the junior fair said.

They were forced to get creative last year, presenting their animals through pictures and posters -- but this year things are back to normal.

"Now this year we're back to the meat, we're back to the fancies, we're back to the water fowl, the turkeys and the geese," Johns said.

"This year it is definitely great to be able to hear all those familiar sounds in the barns and have everyone enjoying seeing them and all the familiar animals," Kraner said.

And Kraner who has been showing ducks for 8 years says she wasn't the only one who missed it, because this flock knows when it's show time.

"They enjoy their time, they feather themselves up. They get ready, they known when show's gonna come because they can feel it in the air," Kraner said.
