Burntwood-Langenkamp Wetland project officially underway

A project that aims to improve the overall quality of Grand Lake St. Marys in Mercer County is officially underway.

Construction on the Burntwood-Langenkamp wetland has begun this week. The wetland aims to improve the overall water quality of the lake, while also enhance the quality of life for those who live in the area and improve the overall visitor experience.

The 90-acre project will work to filter pollutants before they can enter the lake. The project is part of the State of Ohio's initiative to improve the overall quality of water in lakes across the state.

"We've seen, really seen an explosion in the habitat and wildlife that we see in the area in the last 10 years," said Theresa Dirksen, Mercer County Agricultural and Natural Resources Director. "This area right here along Coldwater Creek is very unique because there's a lot of land in conservation. We have our existing Coldwater Creek treatment train, we've got the existing Mercer wildlife area, we've got this property, so it's going to be a really nice corridor for wildlife here."

The project is expected to be completed in late Spring of 2022.
