LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Local college students invite visitors to their campus' "Voices-Off" town.
The American Sign Language Club at OSU Lima organized the annual "Deaf Town" event for students and community members to enhance their ASL skills and learn about the experience of communicating non-verbally. During Deaf Town, using voices was strictly prohibited, and anyone caught doing so would be punished by spending time in the town's jail. The event showcased students, staff, and deaf individuals, highlighting their deaf culture and offering attendees a glimpse into their daily lives.
"For students, this is a good opportunity to use the signs that we've learned to use them in conversation and to interact with deaf individuals and their community. And then, for the community and for other students, it's just a good experience to see their culture and participate," commented Lily Carmer, a student.
Ohio State Lima will hold its "Fall into your Future" open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, October 27, at the student services center.
