The Michigan man who threatened to blow up a bank in Bluffton in 2014 will remain in a facility to treat his mental issues.
In agreement with the defense, state prosecutors this morning(4/15/16) offered evidence showing that 43 year old Brian Matheny is mentally ill and should continue treatment instead of serving jail time. Judge Jeffery Reed ruled that the evidence presented today for the hearing was enough for him to rule that Matheny needed to be committed to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital and that he was guilty of the attempted bank robbery.
Matheny was charged with aggravated robbery after holding up the Chase Bank in Bluffton in late October of 2014. According to police, he gave tellers a note that threatened an explosion if he wasn't given money. Matheny then led troopers on a short chase on I-75. He dropped a Molotov cocktail when he got out of his vehicle, which troopers were able to put out. Matheny was then arrested without further incident.
