Could the pandemic be heading towards becoming an endemic? Ohio’s top doctor says not just yet.

Could the pandemic be heading towards becoming an endemic

The director of the Ohio Department of Health Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff says there are some signs that the pandemic could be evolving to an endemic. An endemic is an illness like flu that is always around but not causing serious threats to the health care infrastructure. But he says it is a little too early to tell if COVID-19 is definitely heading that way.

“Endemic diseases are all around us,” adds Vanderhoff. “From the common cold, to the flu, we don’t know if or when COVID-19 will join that list. We do know the continued efforts to reduce the spread of this virus and increase the immunity are critical to getting us there.”

On January 10th, COVID hospitalizations hit a pandemic high of over 6700 hundred patients statewide. But that number has been falling, to 3400 February 4th or a 48% drop.
